Hello all!

This was my departure from the farm last time down. I love the earlier sunrise and not having to drive hours in the dark.

Farm news...
We're keepin' busy and gettin' stuff done. The few days of warm weather over the weekend really helped, and I was all-but-ready to start plowing in the garden today, but it rained during the night and today and is supposed to continue. It's the same story every spring... so much to do, yet we're completely dependent on the weather for being able to get most of it done.

  • REPEAT: How to get our store to 'remember' your credit card info. USE PAYPAL!
  • Hens. About 10 minutes ago I got a call from the hatchery where we get our chicks, letting us know that they have a bunch ready and would like to deliver them this Saturday, thus we should soon have our own eggs again (the smaller, "pullet" eggs) sooner than expected. And Sam just finished rebedding the henhouse about an hour ago. Good timing!
  • Recent schedule change. We've just made a decision to change to cancel one Saturday delivery date. CANCELLED: May 26th. We will be down April 28 and May 12, then resume our summertime weekly schedule at the beginning of June.

This was the henhouse Tuesday afternoon, before Sam rebedded it and we learned that a new flock of birds would be arriving on Saturday.

This week's produce ... (new, back, or end!)
Same message as last time: storage items are disappearing and the greens are popping up to fill the gap. But this time there are even some non-greens making an appearance: radishes & scallions. And I believe the following time should be the start of asparagus & rhubarb. Ready for dat?

  • Kits: sorrel soup, turnip soup and seconds roasted roots.
  • Greens: arugula, rainbow chard, pepper cress, dandelions, mixed kale, Bibb lettuce, a lettuce mix, mixed mustards, pea shoots, spinach (incl. the "big bag!) & our stir-fry greens mix.
  • Veggies: dried beans (black turtle & Tiger Eye), beets, carrots, English Hothouse cucumbers, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, parsnips, cayenne peppers, potatoes, radishes (red & French Breakfast), scallions, shallots and turnips.
  • Herbs: Basil, chives, cilantro, parsley, sorrel, and one or two each of several other herbs.
  • Apples: Golden Delicious, JonaGold, Pink Lady & seconds.
  • Poultry & Cheese: Stewing hens, chicken & duck eggs, the usual cheeses.
  • Miscellany: cider, apple sauce, honey, maple syrup, blueberry & strawberry jams.
  • Campfire wood!

Plants in the greenhouse trays are coming along. The few sunny days helped, but now we're back to gray and chilly.

Hope you're having a good week! See you Saturday. Thanks for your support,
Randy, Chris & Sam

It was such a nice day last time down to DC that I stopped on my way out of town at the very upscale Kenwood neighborhood along River Road in MD and walked down their "median strip," which just happens to be lined with cherry trees, and was not the only one doing so! And I even ran into one of our former CSA members while there. Nice to see you again, Jeff!
