Hello all,

Our cucumbers plants look good, but for some reason the main cucumber pest -- striped cucumber beetles -- have really gone after the fruits themselves and the great majority of our cucumbers are coming off as "seconds" due to surface scarring. We've created a new unit to try to move more than we would selling them in big bags: two $0.50-size pieces rubber-banded together for the price of one. Please help us out... hate to just throw them in the compost! All you have to do is peel them and they're fine.

On the farm
Good news on one front... we finally caught up with and dispatched the Mr. Groundhog living inside the fence under the henhouse, that after he destroyed about 3/4 of our edamame soybean plants. The next test: I saw another groundhog about the same size today just outside the fence. I guess we'll see whether the rodent guard we've added slows him down any.

[photo] It's taken me 2 months, but I finally feel like I've got the new setup figured out and "routinized" so that it's not a big deal to figure out each week. Thank goodness!

This week's produce (green means "new or back," purple means "sale or reduced price")

  • Greens: arugula, cabbage, chard, cooking greens mix, dandelions, kale, lettuce, pea shoots, purslane, stir-fry mix.
  • Veggies: beans, beets, carrots, corn (bicolor), cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, okra, peppers (sweet & chiles), onions, potatoes (incl. Magic Molly purples), radishes, summer squash (mix is on sale) & tomatoes (incl. boxes of romas), and standards are on sale, and cherries are reduced.
  • Mushrooms: Criminis
  • Herbs: basil (now including Lemon & Spicy Globe), chives, garlic chives, lavender, lemon balm, mint, greek oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, shiso, soup sorrel, stevia, tarragon, thyme & our mini-sampler.
  • Eggs: Yep.
  • Cheese & butter: Yep, and new is Gruyere and smoked Colby cheese.
  • Preserves: Yep, but the numbers are going down until we restock in the Fall.
  • Fruit & Berries: Apples (incl. Dandee Red & Ginger Gold), nectarines, peaches, prune plums, rhubarb & cantaloupes.
  • Campfire wood: for your outdoor fire ring.
  • Plants: a few, there at the truck on Saturday.

Glass jars (pickles, jams, etc.)
You may have noticed that our offerings are shrinking down to just a few items. This is because sales are usually slow in summer and the folks we buy from are busy canning, probably even as I write! So our usual plan is to ride it out until Labor Day weekend, and then come back with a reasonably full offering, including apple cider, which usually isn't especially good until then. So there... something to look forward to!

Thanks for your support,
Randy, Chris & Sam at ...
