[photo] These are your farmers, sitting on a wall next to someone elses home and fields. Namely some ancient Puebloans (used to be called Anasazi), before it was abandoned about 800 years ago. Many more pics at the bottom of this message.

On the farm

Well, we were not all -- in fact -- on the farm all week. After delivering your orders last time, I went home, packed, spent all day Sunday trying to get our business affairs in order, and Monday morning Chris and I drove to Dulles Airport to catch our flight out West for our first week-long vacation in about 7 years. It was totally awesome. And before we go any further, we have to thank our son Sam here on the farm for taking care of everything to make it possible for us to be away. (This is why you have kids, right?) And as luck would have it, we got out about 12 hours before the Nor'easter that dumped 10-12 inches of snow here. So Sam really got lucky. (BTW, it's all gone now and looks like spring again here.)

Produce this week
Lots again, but I'll let our list speak for itself. Check it out below.

This week's CSA produce line-up (new/back)

  • SHF "kits" or "packs:"
    • roasted carrots and potatoes,
    • parsnip and apple soup,
    • Banh Mi slaw,
    • sorrel and turnip soups, and the
    • roasted roots pack.
  • Greens: Arugula, cabbage (2), Italian dandelion, lacinato kale, mustard greens mix, microgreens mix, peas & sunflower shoots, Swiss chard, stir fry mix, spinach & upland cress. Plus green bibb lettuce.
  • Veggies: Dry beans (Jacob's Cattle & Tiger Eye), beets (2 kinds), carrots (3 kinds), celeriac, cucumbers (English hothouse type), garlic (bulbs & bunches), horseradish, Jerusalem artichokes, onions (2 kinds), parsnips, dried Cayenne peppers, potatoes (2 kinds), winter radishes (2 kinds), rutabagas, shallots, sweet potatoes (3 kinds), and turnips.
  • Mushrooms: Blue oyster& criminis
  • Herbs: Chives, cilantro, fennel leaf, Greek oregano, Italian parsley, peppermint, sage, French sorrel & tarragon.
  • Tree fruit: 6 kinds of apples. Our variety pack, Cameo, Empire, Fuji, Gold Rush, Jonagold, Pink Lady, and seconds.
  • Poultry & Cheese: Frozen stewing hens & eggs; 11 cow cheeses and3 goat cheeses. And Trickling Springs Creamery butter, both cow and goat!
  • Preserves: A lot, including more maple syrup!
  • Apple cider: Yup. And Gallons are on sale.
  • Firewood: 40-lb. boxes of logs. One of your last chances.

Our trip to the Four Corners area of the US
Chris and I had the best time. Thanks to our son Jack, who lives out in Flagstaff, AZ, for setting up such a great itinerary and spending so much of his time with us old folks!

[photo] Chris walks away from the oldest church in the USA on the right (built in 1610) and across the alley to the oldest house in the USA, dating from about 1618. Both are in Santa Fe, NM, near where we landed and rented a car, which we put nearly 1400 miles on in 7 days!

[photo] Two hours from Mesa Verde -- and after crossing into Utah -- we caught our first glimpse of Monument Valley National Park.

[photo] Meeting up withJack in Flagstaff, we traveled down Oak Creek Canyon towards Sedona, and on the way stopped at Arizona's Slide Rock State Park.

[photo] And what a beautiful sunset looks like from 9400 feet, about halfway up Humphrey's Peak, at 12,600 feet, the tallest mountain in Arizona, and right in Flagstaff's backyard.
