Hello all!

Welcome Florence!
Hope you have a good trip, enjoy the aerial views of our nation's capital, and leave things pretty much as you find them. We've been trying to monitor what's going on, as best we can from up here, and are planning a more or less usual week's delivery to DC on Saturday (pretty optimistic, right?). But we are aware things could get nasty. I'm feeling confident that I'll make it to Adams Morgan on Saturday, but our concern is for those of you who live at a distance from the market, many even across the river. Leading us to ask this...

PLEASE DO NOT ORDER THIS WEEK IF YOU THINK THERE'S ANY CHANCE THAT YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO COME TO COLLECT YOUR ORDER. WE CANNOT REFUND ORDERS THAT YOU CANNOT COME FOR! (ALTHOUGH WE WOULD BE OKAY TO RETURN THEM THE FOLLOWING WEEK.)

On the farm...

It's been a tough week. We've had over 5 inches of rain since Sunday, and our creek (on the left) was at its lowest level of the summer Saturday. This picture was taken yesterday morning. The waterway on the right is the road into our farm. It has since drained off, but with the forecast for the week it may flood again. Harvesting our crops has not been easy, and many are showing signs of stress/damage from the incessant rain. Many of our tomatoes are split open and ruined. (But those aren't the ones we're offering you, so don't hold back!)

Since we are now committing to come, we hope those of you with easy access to the market by foot will place orders, if you need anything!

This week's produce will include.. (new/back)

  • Greens: cabbage, chard, dandelions, lettuce mix, kale & pea shoots.
  • Veggies: beans (green, Romano, edamame & yellow wax), beets, carrots, celeriac, corn (white), eggplant, garlic, okra, onions, peppers (Cornos & chiles), potatoes, radishes, scallions, sorrel soup pack, sweet potatoes, tomatillos & tomatoes (red, plum/romas, green, yellow, Indigos, heirlooms & cherries), and winter squashes (Butternut & delicata).
  • Herbs: Sampler, chives, lemon balm, parsley, sorrel & mint.
  • Fruit & melons: Honey Crisp & Gala apples, freestone peaches & cantaloupes. Stanley prune plums, Concord & seedless grapes. Plus kiwi berries!
  • Eggs & Cheese: eggs, the usual cheeses, plus Swiss.
  • Miscellany: honey and Apple Cider.

Hope you can find something on the list that looks or sounds good to you! Have a good week and hope to see you Saturday.

...And a pause to think about 9/11/2001, 17 years ago today. Our farm is about 50 miles from where Flight 93 went down. The sky was so empty for a week after that day. Not a plane to be seen. They've built one memorial there and are working on another. I haven't had the nerve to visit yet. May they all rest in peace.
