(Hard to imagine October is almost here!)

Hello all,

Thank goodness it looks like things are going to cool off a bit by later in the week. These 85-90 degree days have made some tough working conditions outside, especially after we'd already gotten used to cooler weather! The good news is that a few items – okra for one – have taken a big jump in numbers.

Upcoming changes in our CSA
Our business playing field has changed considerably in the last 10 years. In fact, the entire CSA, farmers market, “fresh & local” movement has changed, including the current ubiquity of online competition – a la Blue Apron and others – moving into “our” field. And, we're older and less energetic than we used to be. We're trying to find a way to stay relevant and continue to grow healthy produce, help sell our neighbors' and friends' produce, and provide a quality product for you for as long as we can in your community, which we have come to feel a significant part of. That seems most possible only with the following changes.

  • We will begin our every-other-week schedule in November, with the online store open on October 31st and November 14th, for deliveries on November 4 and 18, respectively. Later this Fall we'll post the full Winter schedule by date so you can mark your calendars.
  • Starting in January and running through May, our order hand-out times in DC will be 10:00 to 1:00 instead of 9:00 to 1:00.
  • We plan to shift back to a pay-as-you-go model in mid-November using credit cards online with each order. People with credit balances at that time will be able to use them up, but when they're gone, credit card payment will be required to complete orders.
  • Also in mid-November, the CSA “sign-out sheet” at the truck will end, so at-the-truck purchases will be either cash or credit card.

Many, many details remain to be worked out, and we expect there will be bumps along the way, but hope that you will understand our need and be willing to work with us to move into a new incarnation of our version of farm-to-city produce delivery. Thanks.

And now, finally, this week's produce (new or back) ...

  • Greens: arugula, cabbage, kale, lettuce, pea shoots, tat soi, stir fry & bunched cooking greens mix.
  • Veggies: beans (green & dried), beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, eggplant, garlic, kohlrabi, okra (pints, pickle-packs & a bulk box), onions, peppers (sweet & hot), potatoes (Mollies are back), shallots, sorrel soup pack, sweet potatoes (big ones now), tomatillos, tomatoes (incl. heirlooms and several bulk sizes) & winter squash.
  • Mushrooms: Criminis
  • Herbs: chives, garlic chives, cutting celery, cilantro, lemon balm, mints, parsley, rosemary, sage, sorrel, tarragon & our mini-sampler.
  • Eggs: Yes, from our hens and the Byers' flock.
  • Cheese & butter: Both.
  • Preserves: Yes. Many selections.
  • Specialty fruit & tree crops: Cantaloupes, rhubarb, husk cherries, apples (incl. Jonathan) & Bosc pears. And good news: there may be some strawberries at the truck on Saturday!
  • Campfire wood: for your outdoor fire ring.

Thanks for your support in the past, and hopefully in the future as well,
Randy, Chris & Sam at ...
