How it works


The beginning
Click the CSA INFO tab to see if we are open for new members. Contact us via the SIGN UP form and
we'll tell you what happens next. When you're ready, you'll place a trial order on a Tuesday or Wednesday and then come to our truck in DC the following Saturday morning to pick it up. At the truck on Saturday you ask us any questions you may have about how it all works, inspect the produce to see if you are satisfied with the quality and decide how you want to proceed. Options are:

  • pay $100 and join on the spot
  • pay the amount of your order and let us know what your plans are

If you decide to join, we create a $100 debit account for you in our online store and you're in!

The middle
We send out a reminder email every Tuesday evening when our store opens. (There's a sample posted at the bottom of the WHERE & WHEN tab.) When you want to get produce from us on a Saturday in DC, log-in to the online store and place your order. Pick it up at our truck at 18th & Columbia Road by the farmers market in Adams Morgan that Saturday between 9AM and 1PM. Easy!

The value of your order comes out of your balance. You are never required to place an order if you don’t want anything. Some go through their prepayments quickly, some take a long time – it doesn’t really matter the way our CSA is set up.

When you’ve used up your first $100 credit, you are free to re-up for $100, $200 or $300 (your choice based on your situation) and keep going if you wish, or be done if you don’t.

The end
About 90% of our members stay with us for multiple years and re-ups. Our very first online CSA member (May of 2007, when we converted our online COD farmer's market to an online CSA) is still with us and has re-upped 39 times! When people leave it's most often because they've come to the end of their time in DC; they relocate to another neighborhood; or their life situation has changed such that ordering or pick-up times no longer work for them.

Questions arise about how to close an account if you plan to leave DC while you still have a balance. One traditional CSA tenet we adhere to is "no refunds." We take your advance payments and invest them in our farm. It doesn't work to pull it back out after we've invested it. Your options include spending it all in your remaining weeks; ordering non-perishables (jam, honey, cheese, etc.) to take with you or give to friends; transferring your balance to an existing CSA member or walking away from it and considering it a donation to the farm.
